Shanna Stryker, MD MPH reconvened a panel to discuss the strengths, variations, and needs for successful integration of an integrated care model in practice. Tara Immele, LISW-S from Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health returned to the panel discussing the coordinator’s role among other features. John Hawkins, MD, from The Christ Hospital complimented the discussion with insights from the provider’s perspective. Both panelists demonstrated an engaging and advanced understanding of the dynamics, intricacies and challenges that come with integrated care.


Fellows discuss strategies and barriers to integrated care in practice January, 2021

Shanna Stryker, MD MPH again brought together a panel with decades of cumulative integrated care experience to discuss facilitation at their sites and within their systems. Tara Immele, LISW-S again joined the panel, providing a lens of the model from her position at Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health. Two integrated care team members, Scott Ries, LISW, and John Hawkins, MD, from The Christ Hospital also joined to offer their unique perspective within a larger network as manager and mental health care provider, respectively.

This month, Shanna Stryker, MD MPH assembled and led a discussion panel with a variety of integrated behavioral health care models at their respective organizations to demonstrate what may be possible for fellows to introduce in their own practices. Kathy Van Fleet, MSW, LISW-S, described her experiences at Central Clinic in Cincinnati along with useful tips for navigation of resources in public health programs. Brian Masterson, MD recounted his unique organizational relationship in serving his patients in a large regional health care system. Tara Immele, LISW-S, LCDCIII, provided a detailed summary of the theoretical variability in integrated behavioral health care models from her vantage point at Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health Services.


revisiting the app as a mental health tool for patients: A Panel review January, 2020

Shanna Stryker, MD, faculty for the fellowship, joined the evening discussion to lead a deeper dive into many of the apps now available to the public that may be of some utility to mental health. Each fellow was assigned a specific app to experiment with over the course of a few weeks. The discussion entailed these experiences, including the helpful features, the barriers and downsides, and overall benefits for certain challenges within mental health. Most are free of charge and can be accessed with either operating system format.



Mental health apps emerging as an increasingly accessible and user-friendly tool January, 2019

Chris White, MD JD MHA joined the fellows this month for a walk-through of a few popular mental health apps and the features they offer the user. He also provided insights on the evaluation checkpoints for how to discern the utility, safety, and value of apps for patients. Dr. White is the The Christ Hospital/ University of Cincinnati Family Medicine Residency Behavioral Scientist, and has a dual appointment in family medicine and psychiatry. collaborative care model evidence mounting as an effective model of mental health care March, 2019

The Primary Care Champion Curriculum includes a Mental Health component where fellows are learning more about advocating for, initiating, and sustaining the Collaborative Care model in their practices. This model is increasingly showing promise as an effective facilitator to mental health care access where it is needed most, improving overall health and quality of life for patients.
